# Jam: Play as a Class

Source: https://docs.skaz.io/jam

> Run a Jam: put a Skaz story on the big screen and let the whole class vote from their phones. Hosting, joining, voting rules and privacy.

A **Jam** turns a story into a room game. You put the story on the big screen,
the class joins from their phones with a code, and at every decision they vote.
The majority decides where the story goes next.

## Starting a Jam

- In **Studio**, open your story's page and click **Play as a class**.
- Or open any published story on Skaz and click **Play it with a class** under its description.

You'll need to be signed in. You can host your own team's stories, and any
published story that doesn't ask players to sign in. Stories marked 18+ can't
be played as a Jam.

A Jam counts as one play of the story, however many people are in the room.

## The lobby

The lobby shows a six-digit **code** and a **QR code**. Students go to
[skaz.io/jam](https://skaz.io/jam), type the code and pick a name, or just scan the QR.

- Names show up as people join. Tap the cross next to a name to remove someone.
- If two people pick the same name, the second becomes "Anna 2".
- Switch the room from **Open** to **Locked** once everyone is in, so no one else can join.
- Choose how long each vote lasts: 15, 30, 60 or 90 seconds, or no limit.
- Up to 300 players fit in one room.

Press **Start the story** when the class is ready.

## Playing

Each scene plays on your screen as usual, with its text, characters and music.
Students' phones say "Eyes on the big screen" until it's time to choose.

1. When you reach a decision, press **Open the vote**. The choices appear on
every phone, each with its own colour and shape.
2. While the vote is open, you see how many people have voted, but not for
what. Students can change their vote until it closes.
3. The vote closes when time runs out, when everyone has voted, or when you
   press **Close the vote now**.
4. Everyone sees the results. Press **Continue** and the story follows the
   winning choice.

> You can't overrule the class: the story goes where the majority voted. On a
> tie, you pick between the tied choices. If nobody voted, you pick any.

If the author gave a scene a timer, that timer becomes the length of the vote
for that scene.

Some steps are yours alone, with no vote: a scene with just **Next**, a text
input, and the [wheel of fortune](/guide/blocks), which you spin for the room.

## Ending

When the story reaches an ending, it shows on the big screen and on every phone.
Press **End jam** to close the room. A room nobody touches for six hours
closes by itself.

## Joining as a student

1. Open [skaz.io/jam](https://skaz.io/jam) (or scan the QR code on the board).
2. Type the code and a name the room will see. No account needed.
3. Watch the big screen, and vote on your phone when the choices appear.

If you reload the page, you're back in the same room. **Leave** takes you out.
No one sees what you voted for, only the totals.
